OTHELLO, THE MOOR OF VENICE

This is the title of one of the most famous tragedies by William Shakespeare. He may have written it about 1603 and it is based on an Italian short story “Un Capitano Moro”.

In this play, we see how Iago, a high-ranking soldier, pretending he is an honest and loyal man lies to all the other characters in order to avenge himself. Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army is fooled by Iago and accuses his wife Desdemona of adultery. In the end Othello, mad with jealousy, kills Desdemona and when he learns the truth he kills himself, too.

Shakespeare deals with themes such as racism, love, jealousy and betrayal in Othello, which makes it a quite modern play. Thus, despite being written so long ago, Othello is still often performed in theatres and it has also been adapted to different films, operas or ballets.
